What this solves
Portuguese restaurants don't always serve what's in season. The grilled sardine you eat in November was almost certainly frozen — peak sardine season is June, when they're fished, salted, grilled over coals at santos populares street festivals, and put into tins for the year. Asking for cherries in November gets you tasteless.
This tool takes your travel month and returns what to order, what's worth a detour, and what is closed or stale. It draws on the official fisheries calendar, agricultural seasons and the bacalhau tradition (cod is salted, so technically "365 days a year" — but Easter and Christmas are the obvious peaks).

How to read the result
- "Order now": items that are at their best this month. Restaurants will be running specials, ingredients will be local, prices will be reasonable.
- "Worth a trip": festivals, harvest events, or geographically specific dishes that justify a detour (e.g. cherry orchards in July, chestnut fair in November).
- "Skip this month": either out of season (winter cherry = bad), oder controversially fished (lampreia), or farmed out-of-season at low quality.

Limitations
- Bacalhau is salted, so it's available all year. The "365 modes" are cuisine variety, not seasonality. The peak religious/cultural moments are Easter and Christmas.
- Lampreia (lamprey) is divisive. Its fishery kills the fish. The Michelin-starred Belcanto stopped serving it. If you eat it, you're making an ethical choice.
- Climate change is shifting some windows earlier. Cherry in May in 2026 is more common than in 2016.
- Imports are common — a December "strawberry" in a Lisbon supermarket is from Spain, not local. This is a calendar for what's Portuguese, not what's on shelf.
