What this solves
Tourists look at a Portuguese pastelaria counter and freeze. Everything is small, in a glass case, and there's no English menu. Locals walk in, point at three things, drink a café at the counter in four minutes, and leave. There's no Full English here. There's no fry-up. There's no toast-with-rash. The Portuguese breakfast is small, sweet, and cheap — €2 to €5 per person total.
This tool lets you tick the items you want to order, see the running total in 2026 prices, and tells you what's worth the spend and what to ignore. It's a counter builder, not a list of rules.

How to read the result
- €2–€3 per person: the standard pastelaria breakfast. Coffee + pastel de nata. Fast, no-frills.
- €4–€6 per person: a more substantial breakfast. Includes tosta mista or a galão + 2 pastries.
- €7+ per person: you've ordered too much. The Portuguese breakfast is light — over-ordering and you'll be full until 14:00.
- Skip the toast if: you came for the pastry. Tosta mista is a thing but the joy is the small things.

Limitations
- Prices vary 30% between central Lisbon / Porto and a beach kiosk. The tool assumes central pastelaria.
- The "pastry de nata" priority is an aesthetic, not a nutritional fact. If you want a Full English, you won't find one at a pastelaria — you'll find one at your hotel.
- Portuguese breakfast is light by cultural design. Trying to make it big is fighting the format.
- Counter vs table: most pastelarias have different prices for table service. Sit down, the price goes up.
FAQ
Should I have pastel de nata for breakfast?
Yes — the Portuguese do. Two at most. It is the standard breakfast pastry in central Portugal.
Why no bacon and eggs?
That's not the format. If you want a fry-up, find your hotel buffet. Don't try to order bacon at a pastelaria counter.
Is orange juice really €3?
Fresh-squeezed is €2.50–€3.50. Concentrate from a bottle is €1 and tastes nothing in it. Always ask "natural".
What's the difference between café and galão?
Café = espresso (30ml, strong). Galão = espresso + lots of milk, ~200ml, milky. Meia-de-leite is in between.
