What this solves
"Try Portuguese wine" is the travel-guide cop-out. The four wine regions most visitors encounter — Vinho Verde, Douro, Alentejo and Setúbal — make very different wines from very different grapes in very different landscapes. A glass of Vinho Verde on a Lisbon rooftop and a glass of Alentejo Reserva on an Évora terrace taste like they came from different countries. They didn't.
This tool takes four inputs — your taste, how much time you have, what you want to spend, and the season you'll be there — and ranks the four regions by fit. It will not tell you which region is "best" — that's a question without an answer. It tells you which one matches the constraints you've given.
Pick your wine region
All four inputs change the recommendation.
How to read the result
- Top region: the strongest fit for your four answers. If 1 and 4 are tied, pick the one closest to where you're already going.
- Taste match: a "bold" answer eliminates Vinho Verde as the top pick. A "light" answer puts Alentejo Reserva at the bottom.
- Day-trip time: "none — drink in town" excludes the doubletmeal/day-trip style — you'll be in a tasca, not a quinta.
- Season: Douro in Sep–Oct is harvest — book well in advance. Alentejo in summer can exceed 40 °C.
Portuguese wine region reference (2026)
| Region | Style | Key grapes | Distance from Lisbon | Day-trip? | Best season | Tasting € |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vinho Verde (Minho) | Light white, slight fizz | Alvarinho, Loureiro, Arinto | ~330 km / 3.5 h | Yes, but better overnight | Spring–summer | 8–15 |
| Douro DOC | Full reds, Port, whites | Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Rabigato | ~400 km / 4 h (via A4) | Yes, train from Porto | Autumn (harvest) | 12–25 |
| Alentejo DOC | Smooth, ripe, modern reds | Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet | ~130 km / 1.5 h (Évora) | Yes, easy | Spring / autumn (avoid Aug noon) | 10–20 |
| Setúbal DOC | Sweet Moscatel, oak-aged | Moscatel de Setúbal (white) | ~40 km / 35 min | Yes, half day | Year-round (sweet wine) | 8–18 |
| Dão DOC | Elegant, structured reds | Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Alfrocheiro | ~280 km / 3 h | Full day | Spring / autumn | 8–14 |
| Bairrada DOC | Sparkling, tannic red, espumante | Baga, Maria Gomes | ~200 km / 2 h | Full day | Year-round | 8–16 |
Tasting price is per person for a flight of 3–5 wines. Lunch at the quinta usually adds €15–€30.
Limitations
- Personal taste is more variable than region. A skilled winemaker in Alentejo can make light wines and vice versa. The "match" is to a regional stereotype, not to every bottle.
- This tool does not book tours. Quintas with high ratings (Quinta do Tedo, Quinta do Crasto, Quinta do Bomfim) need to be reserved weeks ahead in autumn.
- Day-trip math assumes a hire car or train. Public transport to Alentejo quintas is poor.
- "Sweet" picks the Setúbal Moscatel — but Douro also makes Tawny & LBV Port, sweet by another route. If you want Port specifically, override the suggestion.
FAQ
Is Vinho Verde actually green?
It's a light, sometimes slightly fizzy white wine — the name means "young wine", not the colour. The reds (Vinhão) are deep purple and tannic.
Do I need to go to the Douro to drink good Douro wine?
No. Most Douro DOC bottles are available in any garrafeira. The reason to go to the Douro is the landscape, the quinta experience, and Port tasting at source.
When is Douro harvest?
September to early October. Vineyards open their lagares for tourists during this window; book accommodation early.
Is Alentejo wine strong?
Often 14–15% ABV, smooth, ripe fruit, sometimes oak-aged. Modern style — less harsh than old-school Douro.
