What this solves
Serra da Estrela is Portugal's only mountain with ski infrastructure — three drag lifts at Torre (1990 m), the highest point in mainland Portugal. Most visitors either expect "ski in Portugal" to be a tourist trap (it isn't quite, but it's small) or show up in summer expecting snow. The mountain is interesting all year. The ski season, when it runs, is short.
This tool takes your month and your plan (skiing, cheese, just driving up, hiking) and tells you what's open, what's worth the drive and what to skip. The queijo da Serra (~€15–€25/kg) is the unsung part — a soft, bouncy, slightly-rancid DOP cheese that you'll only get in the villages around the mountain.

How to read the result
- Snow status: "guaranteed" means >1 m base at Torre. "Marginal" means variable. "Closed" means no chance of skiing.
- Ski runs: 3 drag lifts. Total skiable terrain ~6 ha in Luxembourg. Don't expect the Andes.
- Queijo stops: the cheese is year-round but the queijarias open at varied times. Saturday morning is best.
- Torre drive: N-339 from Seia. The last 8 km are switchbacks. Snow chains or café winter tires required Nov–Mar.

Limitations
- Ski season is weather-dependent. There have been years (e.g. 2015–16) with no skiable days. Don't fly to Lisbon specifically to ski Estrela.
- The mountain is small. 3 drag lifts, ~6 ha of skiable area. If you want big mountain, go to Sierra Nevada (Spain) or Pyrenees.
- The queijo da Serra is DOP and varies in quality. Buy from a queijaria, not a supermarket. €15–€25/kg.
- Torre drive: snow chains are required by law from Nov–Mar when signposted. Hire cars charge €50–€100 for chains.
FAQ
Is there skiing in Portugal?
Yes — Torre at Serra da Estrela. 3 drag lifts, modest terrain. January is most reliable. Some years the season runs Dec–March; some years it's Jan–Feb only.
Where do I eat the cheese?
At the queijarias around Seia, Gouveia and Oliveira do Hospital. Try Queijaria Almeida in Oliveira do Hospital or Queijaria Quinta do Povo Pequeno. Pair with vinho do Dão.
Can I drive up to Torre in winter?
Yes — but snow chains required when signposted (usually Nov–Mar). Hire car companies may refuse chains on smaller cars.
Is the mountain worth it without snow?
Yes — the glacial valley, the lagoons (Côa, Comprida), the viewpoints. Hiking is well-marked. Cheese is year-round.
