Algarve internal transit

Faro ↔ Tavira ↔ Lagos by train, car, or day-tour coach — with the actual constraint that Praia da Rocha and Sagres are off the rail line.

What this solves

The Algarve's rail line is a single 130 km corridor from Faro on the Spanish border (Tavira side) down through Olhão, Faro, Albufeira, Portimão, and onward to Sagres (Lagos, actually). The cheap and easy answer for that corridor is the train. The catch: Praia da Rocha, Sagres, and most of the west-coast surf beaches are off the corridor, and the bus / coach alternatives there are 2–3x slower.

This tool maps the realistic options (CP regional train, Rede Expressos coach, rental car, day-tour coach) for each leg, and surfaces the day-of-week price variation that decides whether you hire a car for two days or take day-tour coaches from a base in Faro or Lagos. Saturdays and August run more expensive; mid-week runs €15–€25 cheaper.

How to read the result

The rail corridor — Faro to Lagos — has 12 stops and runs roughly every 90 min, with full-day ticket validity on the 2-2.5-hour end-to-end journey. It is genuinely cheap and genuinely useful. The Praia da Rocha / Sagres constraint is the trap: Praia da Rocha is between Portimão and Ferragudo on a small branch line, not on the main corridor; Sagres has no rail and the coach takes 2h 30m from Faro.

For groups of 4+ who want to see more than one beach per day, a rental car at €25–€50/day mid-week (€60–€90 in July/Aug) almost always wins. For solo or couple travellers who only want one destination a day, the train + Rede coach combo is usually cheaper.

FAQ

Can I take the train from Faro to Lisbon airport?

Faro airport has a direct train station (5-min walk from terminal). Faro → Lisbon Oriente (next to airport terminal) is 2h 40m on Intercidades, €22–€32. Faster and cheaper than a flight for most days.

Is Praia da Rocha reachable by train?

Close but not directly. The nearest station is Portimão (3 km away). Vamus bus 14 runs Portimão → Praia da Rocha every 30 min in summer. The Praia da Rocha branch rail was decommissioned in the 1990s.

Are Algarve trains scenic?

Surprisingly yes between Silves and Tunes. Otherwise they run inland. The coastal route (EN 125) is the scenic road; you only see it by car or day-tour coach.

Should I rent a car in the Algarve?

If you want more than one beach per day, or want Sagres / west coast, yes. Otherwise the train is faster and cheaper. August car-hire prices are 2x mid-week off-season.
